Plain Leaf vs Modded Leaf vs No Leaf

Battery trailer is on my to-do list this summer, assuming my Tesla stock does well enough for me to sell a few shares and make a decent profit. My goal is to actually make a solar and battery trailer, with panels that pop up and extend when parked, but still have 2-3 panels exposed when in motion to allow for a smaller amount of charging while going down the road. It would still require a L2 EVSE and pure sinewave inverter, to simply charge when stopped, but that would work for some of my longer range needs where it's a back/forth drive to a location without charging ability. I'm eying to use Tesla batteries for this. It would be a prototype, then I would hopefully build them as portable "green" generators for emergency sites, music festivals, etc.

They arrive at these inflated numbers by multiplying the maximum voltage (1000v) by the maximum amps (350a continuous, 400a with liquid cooled plug and limited duty cycle). No car is likely to EVER charge at 350kW, or 400kw with these chargers.

There will be cars, like a Tesla today, that can use 350-400 amps, but that will very likely be at far lower voltages.

There is one vehicle that can use all those amps... Tesla cars. The problem is that the Tesla - CHAdeMO adaptor is limited to (drum roll)... 125 amps, just like a GM Bolt EV, and virtually every EV that has DC charging cacpabilty EXCEPT all Tesla cars (except Roadster), Hyundai Ioniq and Kia Soul EV.

It does seem that way, huh? :mrgreen: I'd recommend that he block me as well, and save himself a little of that consternation that he is having. But, I've learned that the trolls NEED the interaction. I'm as much to blame by interacting with the guy as he is for being a troll, particularly when I know the game so well.

I have a 2015 Leaf entire traction unit, charger (6.6kw), battery, complete air conditioning unit, headlamps/tail lamps/matching ECU's/Wiring harness/Calipers/airbags/2 keys, more misc for sale. It was parted out with less than 10k miles. I am looking to get $3850.00 for it all. Show up with cash and a 2" ball as the trailer comes with it. Misc items not pictured. I am in Tampa, FL area.

You make assumptions to reach your conclusions. Let's repeat FACTS, and then you can attempt to argue the facts, and not your assumptions, mmmmmKay?

All Tesla cars and ONLY the Ioniq and Soul EV can charge at 200 amps or above. All these cars have 400 volt batteries (plus or minus 5 volts):

45kW = 365v * 125a max charge rate (Bolt EV, typical of most modern non-Tesla cars)
50kW = 400v * 125a max charge rate (Tesla with biggest battery, 90-100kWh)
70kW = 350v * 200a max charge rate (Soul EV and Ioniq in Norway and few other locations)
115kW = 325v * 365a max charge rate (Tesla 70-75kWh on Supercharger)
115kW = 350v * 330a max charge rate (Tesla 85-100kWh on Supercharger)

So, given that there are no non-Tesla chargers over 125 amps in the USA, and that the Tesla adaptor is limited to 125 amps, that means that ALL cars are limited to about 50kW. Period.

Now, let's look into the future. There is absolutely NO REASON that the Bolt EV can't accept 200 amps, with a battery that is twice as big as those two other non-Tesla cars that can also accept 200 amps that you are so enamored with.

Now, given this future scenario, with ubiquitous 200 amp or greater public chargers, I think even Ed can understand that the Bolt EV would be superior over a long distance journey (or maybe we just get more ad hominems).

can anyone help suggest a supplier for car seat covers for the Leaf which allow access to seat all rear seat belts and ISOFIX points - we transport our grand-children quite often/

I ended up with a different one that I think is an overall better car/deal. 2013 SV (December 2013 build date) with 23,000, not a single ding on it, and I got to scan the battery to see 87% SOH/86.12% Hx/57.3 A-Hr which I think is pretty good for a 2013 at this point.

Um, not really.

The drivetrain efficiency is the most important factor to efficiency to moving the car. This is why EV's are so much better than ICE vehicles.

The second most important factor is aerodynamic drag. For typical cars HALF the load on the drivetrain occurs at 28-30MPH. And it increases rapidly - aero drag goes up by the square of the speed.

Rolling resistance is third, and it increases linearly, so it dominates below 28-30MPH.

Weight is next - and weight can be partially regained, through coasting and regen.

Tony,

You still don't seem to understand the simple fact that a BEV that gets superior efficiency in m/kWh from the charge site will spend less time charging for each mile driven.

I'll try one more time to explain the facts to you.

The Bolt is not terrible from an efficiency standpoint (far superior to a Toyota/Tesla shit sandwich BEV, for example) but it will spend much more time recharging on a long trip than a more efficient BEV like an Ioniq, whatever the rate of charge.

The Ioniq would have to stop once for twenty or thirty minutes to cover the first ~200 miles of a long freeway trip, and fall behind a Bolt by that amount of time, initially.

But after that, the Ioniq will steadily catch up to the Bolt, and eventually pass it, as the trip continues, and less time is wasted at the charge site.

I have only Qty 2 - 17" SV wheels with TPS sensors and literally no tire wear. I can measure the tread if your interested when I get home.

I have just got a off-lease 2015 Nissian leaf S (with quick charge option and 15400 miles) for $8000 ($8650 including tax and title OTD) from the local Nissan dealer. The transaction appears to be very complicated (the lease guy has to buy out the car, sells that to the nissan dealer and I buy it from the nissan dealer). It works out really well because the seller (lease guy) has made good arrangements with the Nissan dealer in advance, in total it takes a little more than 1 hour to close the transaction. I speculate that the guy got huge buy-out discount from Nissan Finance, otherwise he won't even bother the hassle. During the financial transaction, it confirmed my speculation. Nissan gave him $9000 discount for him to buy out the off-lease(2 year lease) car. The gross buyout price is about $13800, after $9000 discount, he will get the car at about $4800 (maybe some tax as extra, he might share some profit with this local Nissan dealer). I don't really care and think I get a decent deal myself. Now I need to working on to sell my wife's 10 years old Hyundai Sonata.

I just added some Hella fog lights but I am also having difficulty finding a way to run wires through the firewall. I am quite happy with the way my mounting scheme works the lights seem to solve my visibility problem but that is with the wires running through the window. Now I need to finish this up. I don't see the grommet you guys are talking about. Does anyone have a picture?

Everything except the body panel, bumper cover, and the headlight are in "2011" condition. Until someone backed into the car, it was almost like new. Body shop said it needs between $2500-3000 of work because of the headlight, bumper attachment, front quarter panel, and where it connects to the frame part is bent (so it needs work to the connector metal part to reconnect the panel back on). Everything under the hood is in perfect condition and works. Hood and door panels are in perfect alignment... only the front body panel, headlight, and bumper cover were affected.

Anyway, does anyone want it for a reasonable sale price?

Your math won't work. When the car nears full (~94 to 96% or so on the % SoC display), the car begins ramping down and enters a bounce phase. Very little energy makes it into the car in the last hour or so.

Also, the time estimates aren't very good. Sometimes they're significantly longer than actual. If you take off 1 hour, 20 minutes as you describe, you will be WELL past 80%.

Also, US voltages are not 110 nor 220 volts.
