Just got a 2nd Leaf this past weekend before the credit expires.

2015 Leaf S + QC
$274/month
3 year lease
VPP
$0 down out of pocket
$10K residual

Overall pretty happy with the deal. My 2014 S+QC was a 2 year lease at $249/month and $0 down (out of pocket) and is due back in March 2016.

To answer some of the above questions...

Yes, I would agree with this program at a reduced incentive, but that is only because the existing $7500 federal credit can only be utilized by someone who pays $7500 in federal tax, thus making it at least partially off limits to lower income earners, so something that allows them to buy an EV at a reduced price (other than leasing) would make sense. That being said, I think it should be correlative to the credit given on a new car, so if I get $7500 off a $28,000 new Leaf, a comparable credit of roughly $3-4,000 would be totally justifiable.

Secondly, I don't think you will ever see used leaf prices fall much below $8K, except for maybe very high mileage 2011 models. The new ones are holding up very well battery wise and once they get below $8K, they become a downright steal. Especially if Nissan starts selling 30kwh packs for them at reasonable prices.

Lastly, I agree, if the IRS says its legal then there's nothing wrong with it. There's nothing immoral about using the tax code to your benefit. What's immoral is how the government wastes and misappropriates so much of our tax dollars. They have a moral obligation to not run the country into debt, and operate pyramid schemes with my tax dollars.

North Shore Mall in Peabody is up on PS now. Cruised around Greendale Mall but no sign of an install there yet.

Got the RFID card, but no hit on my CC yet. Maybe they only do those transactions once a month too? Hard to say at this point. Guess I'll have to actually go somewhere and see if it works.

How much can a nissan leaf tow? Feats of towing might!

Long term MPGe results at high speeds and high loads, nearly 50% better than stock with a few simple aerodynamic improvements.

Fixed the eBay and blinking issues.

It's the chicken and the egg - if more people did contribute money to the site we wouldn't have to sell your words :)

Will we find out the new deal on July 1st (ie. do they announce the new offer right after the old one expires)?

I don't know what the NO SD CARD screen shows or doesn't show...never seen one.

But I do know that for a new card Nissan requires the Unit Code, Serial Number, and Confirmation Code. So any of those things not available to an owner with a missing card, plus the VIN number to cross reference against.

What is the reality of trying to get out of a Leaf Lease?

Your options aren't very good.

You can return the car anytime but you're still obligated for your contracted payments.
You can continue on for a year (or pay it off and keep it) and get what use out of it you can.
You can try to sell it, but good luck.
Lease assumption still leaves you liable, per NMAC.
You can try to trade it in a deal for a new Nissan and see what you can get.
You could not move.
You could find a closer job.

Any 240V L2 EVSE should do it.

You'd need to switch out the L1 that came with the car with either an EVSE Upgrade unit, or a European OEM L1 with the appropriate adapter.

I'm not sure this is true. I haven't looked into the Leaf's motor, but from what I remember from school, an electric motor's efficiency drops off at higher RPMs. Its torque/power curves are remarkably flat, maybe that's what you're thinking of?

Case in point: both the Model S and the Volt get improved efficiency at high speeds by using a different gear ratio (in both cases, through different motors with a different, but fixed, gear ratio).

You're right Reg. I didn't read the press release. I see press releases like this all the time.

As far as the so-called wind turbine, it's nothing but hype and hot air.

And yes, a real wind turbine was always an option. There are real wind turbines at sanctuaries and parks and have been for years. I've written about them.

The Nature Conservancy has been hornswaggled and someone should lose their job over this.

I always wanted a Leaf but just can't afford one until two weeks a go. I picked up a CPO 2012 SL with an extremely low mileage of 1236!!! for only 13.5K with zero down and 3.65% for 4 years. My commute to work is only 50miles round trip and it costing me $225/m in gas with my 1997 Grand Cheroke and now my Leaf payment is less than $300/m! LOVE THIS CAR!!! Although my company doesn't allow me to charge, another company about .25 of a mile a way let me charge for free. They have 10 level 2 charging stations open to the public and free to charge!!! how awesome is that? Now no more gas :D

asimba2 wrote:Demand charges can easily be 90% of the cost of a public EVSE installation, even for Level 2. For a Level 2 installation, Southern CA Edison charges $134.17 base rate for the meter, $1,752/mo demand charge for installations below 40kW plus the cost of the electricity. In a recent study, 92% of the EVSE costs were the demand charges. The cost to charge each vehicle can be extremely high, mostly due to the demand charges that are assessed regardless of the amount of electricity used. These high demand charges are why many public EVSEs charge 2-3X the going rate for electricity. That's Level 2. DCFC has considerably higher demand charges, raising the cost per vehicle significantly more.

I'd love to see some quotes for demand charges for a 100kW+ 7-stall supercharger station.

With such demand chargers we should be asking to go in the opposite direction. Give me a 120v outlet on a wooden post or a lighting pole in the parking lot and I'll be happy.

Don't bother doing some minor cosmetic changes like a darker font and a different formatting. You need to fundamentally change the architecture of this site and make it support mobile devices. I am NOT willing to accept security as a reason for not providing mobile app access. That is baloney. How come Teslamotorsclub.com a forum that probably has an order of magnitude higher membership and traffic, and I am sure gets lots more attacks than anything this site sees, has a mobile app while this one doesn't ?

The downward slide for this site started a year or so ago, and this change has accelerated it. No superficial updates you might do at this time will arrest that decline and interest. This decline comes especially at a time when the next iteration of Leaf with a larger battery is hitting the stores in a few months, followed by Leaf 2.0 which is expected to compete with the mythical Tesla Model 3. After nearly 4 years Nissan is expected to stir the pot in longer range EVs, which should bring in a ton of new users here.

Doing all these is like shooting yourselves on the foot.

While I'm absolutely disappointed with these changes, and agree that things have changed for the worse, you're comparing apples & oranges, plus security always trumps design (although in this case, I don't think security is what dictated this specific design). TMC is running on a completely different platform.

However, for kickass mobile support, all they have to do is install Tapatalk (phpbb is supported), which is really easy, and would make many people people disliking the design stick around.

I think at this point, 2 things need to happen:

  • Add the ability to pick a more reasonable skin, so they can keep working on the main skin while the site becomes more accessible again.
  • Add Tapatalk support, since most folks using forum communities already have the app installed anyways.

As I mentioned before, I 100% understand how difficult of a job this is, and it doesn't get easier when maintaining multiple communities, but deploying this kind of update on the busiest property was a big mistake.

Totally agree with Tapatalk. If it such a simple install, I am hopeful it will happen.
