Health effects of driving around in an EV

Some people are more sensitive and the effects are manifest is physical reactions that can be seen. All vehicles and our homes, and places of work bath many of us is vast amounts of EMF, radio, and other "environmental" forms of pollution that really isn't good for any of us.

So if the question "Does the Leaf present more health risks to us than our conventional car?" That is a good question. And I can say the only way to really know that would be to get an EMF meter, and possibly an air sampling unit to see how much radiation and toxic stuff is emitted by the Leaf.

Most cars when new off gas higher levels of "stuff" in the air that is probably at a health effecting level and I am sure there have been studies on this. I recall reading something some time back. It is sort of like the levels of offgasing that happens when putting in new carpet in a home. So there is that concern. Those offgasing levels fall over time, but there is still a certain amount of this chemical soup in our air.

On the EMF and other effects honestly I think it wouldn't hurt to do some testing just to satisfy your own curiosity. Nothing wrong with asking these questions, and at the same time put the same level a scrutiny on our ICE cars as well. It would seem pretty reasonable that the levels of exposure will be pretty similar between the ICE and EV, but we wouldn't know unless we tested it. The levels of shielding, design, and location will affect the amount of exposure.

Many of these "published" tests remind me of the "industry" funded tests with cell phones. Go ahead and put your cell phone up to your head for hours at a time if you want to believe the published tests telling you how safe it is. I certainly don't and won't since it appears that every other day I hear about someone else with brain cancer... Everyone seems to think that is "normal" now too. Sad what we can get used to.

I suspect the comparisons between an ICE and EV in regards to EMF and other things is similar, but without independent tests we certainly won't know. I would ask if you are concerned about these things in a car are you also giving your home and office space the same level of scrutiny? Target fixation is a real thing so use this same level of curiosity in all avenues of life. There are probable opportunities to reduce exposure in many places and ways.

If anyone on here decides to have some fun and run some tests please do share. I think many people would be curious to see what you find.

July is here and my battery stats have only dropped slightly through June despite a heat wave that brought 100+ degree temps for a week or more. I'm at 297 GIDs. AH=64.91 SOH=81%, Hx=74.74% milage is now 29779 with 46 QC's and 553 L1/L2 charges. Gauge is switching between 11 and 12 bars (11 after charging and then 12 after 20-30 minutes of driving). I don't know if the battery is finally stabilizing or if I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop. At this point I've got a strong 24 KWH car which is adequate for my needs. If I lose another 3-4 KWH then I'm just marginal for daily use and will need to hit the QC station pretty regularly.

Rusting bolt on front suspension strut - potential safety issue

that would probably fix it 95-100%. the 5% variability comes from the fact that water still drains into that hole from the wiper and you cant guarantee that the flexidip won't let water seep through at some point and slowly start rusting the bolt from underneath where you can't see it.

if you have it around, then spray that on first, as that will take most of the issue away. then later put in a fix that doesn't let water sit in that pool.

Ben, I would avoid this given the uncertainty. Drive down to Atlanta and take advantage of the $10k off deal on the 2017 Leaf now, plus you will definitely get the FTC. That's basically half off a brand new Leaf, and the 2017 has an extra 6 kWh of battery to boot! I love our 2015, but if we didn't already own one I would be buying a 2017 right now.

nI case anyone's wondering why the supercharge.info map only shows 20 U.S. SCs under construction, Dows, IA is missing, as it was reported usable and showing on the in-car nav on 7/1, although it's not yet on Tesla's SC map/list. I don't count them until they're 'official' in at least one of those three places.

From 2014 model year, there were 2 new functions in the Nissan Leaf.
1. After releasing the windshield washer after 10-20 seconds, the wipers are activated once more.
2. When turning the turn signal (not full turn ON) - the indicator flashes 3 times, in the old version - flashes 1 times.
Turbo, try please do it in your new version of the program.

Via ABG, a problem that hadn't occurred to me:
Volvo’s self-driving cars are thrown off by kangaroos
http://www.autoblog.com/2017/07/02/volv ... -kangaroo/

Volvo, like seemingly every other company, has been working on its autonomous vehicle technology and has run into an interesting problem. While testing its cars in Australia, the company found that kangaroos were both a nuisance and very confusing to its cars.

The vehicles' detection system has been exposed to large animals before – it came across moose while being tested in Sweden and it can respond to deer, elk and caribou. But kangaroos move much differently than other animals and their hopping is throwing off the system. "When it's in the air it actually looks like it's further away, then it lands and it looks closer," Volvo Australia's technical manager David Pickett told the ABC. . . .

This suggests that Pronghorn Antelope and sometimes deer could be an software issue in the U.S., although I have no idea if they bound on hard pavement. Video of Pronghorn bounding: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1DvZbblGIk

As a general rule, accelerated degradation for Li-ion batteries occurs above 30 deg. C/86 deg. F. If they spend most of their time between 15 deg. C (59 deg. F) and 30C/86F, you can expect decent life and range.

This is only necessary if the ground pin on the generator receptacle is unbonded and left floating. So check the generator first. You could just try charging with your EVSE first, and if the EVSE throws a ground fault, check the ground to neutral resistance on the generator receptacle with an ohmmeter.

I'm in uk and have been testing my 2017 reg leaf tekna done 150 miles so far and average about 4.7m/kwh though have been above 5. As a little test today I took the leaf out on 100% charge and used the hilliest route up from me to a moors road then back home 31 miles used 21% battery. I use b mode + eco and to be fair these country roads don't let you get above 55 at best. But so far on this drive and others I am seeing a genuine potential for 130 plus miles eg extrapolating today's figures over 100% would equal 147 miles.
In uk tekna uses 17" wheels and has a lower drag coefficient .28 as opposed to .29 on all other models and a slightly higher top speed of 89mph rather than 88.mph so it may factor in. Also the 3rd blue dash light was still flashing so may have been under 100% charged by small amount 1 or 2 percent.
Don't get me wrong I don't judge by the guessometer at all as but had 10 bars still showing though suspect 10 will disappear in around 5 or 6 miles.
Next week I am driving from Middlesbrough to Scarborough which is a 94 mile round trip be very hilly be interested in the half way point to see what percentage battery used and left for return. Will start at 100% proper.

You can also probably find a replacement OEM EVSE on ebay.

I would try sending it to evseupgrade.com for repair first. There's also https://store.clippercreek.com/level1/p ... ng-station.

Sure, one can get OEM Nissan ones from eBay, but I do wonder how many of them are legit vs. stolen.

Thanks! As I suspected, yet another data point to validate that it seems '13 Leafs built before 4/2013 seem to have inferior batteries in terms of degradation.

Vancouver to set fees for Electric car charging

The reality is the only company that can make money on public charging services is the electric company. They could easily bill 10X their power cost and undercut any competition. Seattle City Light among others are looking into it. Pretty sure they can swing pretty good infrastructure improvement deals...with themselves.

@GRA said "To date, I don't know of a single for-profit charging company which has to pay a utility for the electricity that's profitable."

Sure, but take note of the differences:
1. These L2 spots are hosted by the city and have built-in discounts to the owner.
2. Vancouver differs greatly from the US cities you may be thinking of. Not only do they have a much higher EV penetration rate, they have a relatively large Apt dwelling population that drive EVs.
3. Their $2/hour CAD is a good deal compared to driving an ICE, even if no home charging is available. Petrol in BC costs ~ $1 a liter. It would take a 20 km/liter ICE to match the price.

I think LeftieBiker is correct. There appear to be some subtle differences in the headlight assembly. An Australian site posted a slightly less cropped image (see below) and it looks to me that the individual LED modules are rectangular and "production" looking, while the IDS had narrower LED modules, with a swoopy design to the bezel/frame. The fact that the "grill" matches up well with the earlier teaser image implies to me that Nissan is showing the actual production Leaf nose. Why would they show the IDS so close to actual release of the Leaf 2.0, and risk drawing criticism from people for doing a bait and switch?

Considering 2012 with new battery, how does this look?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the Leaf and am considering purchase of a 2012 that had the battery replaced within the last month. Owner reports about 400 miles on the new battery. Car has 51k on it. I took some Leaf Spy screenshots, hopefully I captured everything I need to. I was surprised to see that the number of charges doesn't reset when the battery is replaced. Comments appreciated.

Yes, this is an interesting bug indeed. But I have found a work-around, as well as some more details about the circumstances under which this actually occurs. I had a 2011 Leaf up until a few months ago, which never had this problem, and recently upgraded to a 2017 Leaf. After reading the previous comments, I did some experimenting and tried some of the suggestions from previous posts.

First of all, pushing pause does nothing, at least for me. But I discovered, as perhaps some of you have found, that this problem does not happen ALL of the time, just usually. So I started trying different things, and figured out that it ONLY happens when you start driving before the infotainment system has completely booted. More specifically, it only happens if you start moving AND turn the steering wheel a certain amount.

So, of course, the workaround is to wait 20 seconds after pushing start before you drive away. I've found that the time to wait is pretty much EXACTLY 20 seconds, which is about at the point at which the phone connection message goes off.

So it would seem that this bug is triggered by some sort of electrical short caused by steering-while-driving-while-booting. Mind you, this problem is NOT triggered by simply turning the steering wheel, nor by simply driving directly forward or backward, but ONLY when you are both driving AND turning the steering wheel. I'm going to mention this to the mechanic at my Nissan dealership, but I seriously doubt that anyone will be able to do anything about this. So for now, I for one will be waiting 20 seconds after pushing start before I start driving.
