Yes driving an EV does have benefits on that side. There is however a road rage downside. We've noticed some people seem to be extra aggressive when they see an EV. That is one reason I'm liking the idea of EV being an option for normal looking cars like the eGolf. I like the idea of getting all of the EV benefits without drawing the anti-EV road rage. More regular cars are getting hybrid options. We need more regular car EV options too.

What's the expected battery life of a LEAF

I'm in the DFW area

I'm guessing "Dallas / Fort Worth" but it's generally not a good idea to assume that acronyms other than "DC" or "NYC" or "LA" will be understood. We don't want your address or social security number, just your nearest city. As already noted, your climate isn't good for Leafs. If you want to own an EV you need one with active battery cooling, like a Bolt. A Volt would also work if you don't mind having a gasoline engine.

Did your price include anything, like gap insurance?

I believe that Nissan self-insures for GAP. If the car is totaled you lose the down payment, but don't owe anything on the lease.

There is a brief drain approaching 10 amps at startup, and the 12 volt amperage while charging is low. When the car is being driven the converter handles all loads, but doesn't quickly recharge the accessory battery like an alternator/regulator would do. So you need longer trips to charge the 12 volt battery back up.

Good news: you do not have to replace the whole nav / radio / cd unit for $3600 just because your touch screen is cracked. The replacement screen is $22.19!

Bad news: the replacement screen is tricky to fit.

Touch screen is made by Clarion. Clarion Part number Qy7200Na

SKU: 930780649378.

I purchased my replacement touch screen from PacParts, Inc (http://www.pacparts.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) who were very slick and easy to deal with, and I highly recommend them. Price was $22.19.

PacParts phone number is 800 421 5080 or 310 515 0207.

If your actual LCD screen (under the touch screen) is damaged, a replacement part is also available from PacParts. SKU: 9300467159977, $152.36.

You need a #2 Philips screwdriver to get the nav. unit out of the dash, and a #0 Philips to dismantle the screen bezel to replace the touch screen. *BUT*, as the touch screen is tricky to fit, most people would probably be better off having the touch screen replaced at a Clarion service center. Service centers can be found under the support tab on http://www.clarion.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, then click on "service"

http://www.clarion.com/us/en/support/service/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I hope this information is found by those unfortunate enough to have broken their touch screen before they fall into despair and spend the $3,600 for a new box from Nissan.

Adrian

Leaf will go 94 indicated (93 mi/hr by GPS if tires are inflated to maximum pressure) up hill, on the level, or down hill. Actual speed will be slightly lower if tires are softer.

66.14 AHr is default value provided from LBC (lithium battery controller) on 2011 and 2012 Leaf until it learns actual capacity of new battery. Leaf Spy numbers dropped on my 2011 by the time I drove 10 miles home from the dealer.

aarond12 wrote:@OP The drain on the battery should be relatively low. I seem to remember someone saying the drain was around 400-450W at idle. That's very little compared to the 22-33kWh contained in the traction battery. Three hours of idle would have likely dropped the battery a percent or two.

Many times I eat lunch in my car and I just leave it "running" so I can easily put my windows up. I rarely notice any drop in percentage for a 30 minute lunch.

its only that high if in drive. In park, its much lower

It takes the BMS some time to learn the health and capacity of the battery pack. A few full cycles, down to 20% and then a full charge, should help with the process. I would also suggest a few full charges to balance the cells. Just don't let it sit at 100% for extended periods of time.

Yes, Dallas/ Fort Worth. Thanks for the feedback. I would love to get the Bolt; unfortunately they haven't made it down here yet.

I've seen 2 distinct differences in behavior with my replacement (lizard) battery pack:
1) The (now) well-known 66.14 AHr reading for the first several months (as mentioned earlier).
2) A steady decrease in capacity for the next few months...until it simply stopped.

Even with the heat, I've been 'stuck' around 57 AHr (and 12 bars) for a while now; it will be interesting to see how long that holds up, as I have yet to reach the point where even my first battery pack dropped a capacity bar.

$10K incentive for Leaf buyers in Arizona (SRP customers) !!

Read the fine print in the SRP "deal"--it clearly states discount is from MSRP and cannot be combined with other Nissan offers such as reduced APR financing and rebates. Perhaps someone in SRP's service area will actually get the 10k discount and be allowed to combine it with other incentives, but that is not what the promotion states.

My wife was in this bad habit and when she began to drive our Prius C with its manual drive select the car began to roll away as she was getting out. Fortunately she changed her habits after a few times and before anything bad happened......

Are you saying they've changed the way the Prius power button works :?
Ours definatly goes into park as it shuts down, if it didn't I'd take the extra second to actually push the park button but since pushing the power button puts mine in park, I just save the extra step.

To engage in a little confirmation bias, I notice as much impatient driving by BMW and Jetta owners as trucks/SUVs. Whether it's actually more than other cars or I just label those people... ;)

That is good, I guess I'll find that out soon.

drhlee1 wrote:I did not buy the gap insurance. I did get VPP and Leaf loyalty discounts.

By the way, CVRP just run out of money for the standard rebate and any new rebate will be place on the wait list. If you qualify for the increase rebate, they still have funding for that.

I qualify by like $400, I guess I better get a move on.

Vancouver to set fees for Electric car charging

On the island DCFC cost is $0.35 per kWh (plus parking fee's) which is reasonable seeing as we pay $0.10 / kWh as residential average rate.

Try the arithmetic again

Nothing wrong with the math. 5.8kWh on a 208V evse @ $0.35/hr is $2.03 . This should be charged in my opinion right now they are free causing the congestion problem. If your driving a phev c/w a 3kw charger this price will double with the proposed hourly chrge.
If I plug into a shared EVSE and another ev plugs in to the second head we will both be paying double as they are only rated at 6kWh total( not to many around but they are there, Chemainus for eg) .
I guess my beef is the DCFC charge of $16 PLUS the $0.35/kWh Plus parking.

We should be able to agree that 35 cents a kWh is pretty comparable to $2 an hour by L2 for most EVs on the road, meaning at least 6.6 kW OBC. After all, even if the commercial charger is 208V instead of 240V, 30Amps is a fairly typical amperage, giving 6.24 kW for a kwh cost of 200/6.24 = 32 cents a kWh. So if you are happy with the island per kWh charge, the L2 hourly rate should not bother you either.

The DCFC combined rate of 35 cents a kWh + $16 a hour does indeed sound expensive -- about twice as much as L2. OTOH it works out to a per mile charge not too different than what you pay for petrol. The big difference for most people though is that DCFC is a small fraction of their total miles while petrol cars pay that all the time.
