CEC DC Fast Charge Sites map:

For some reason the post below showed up dated Mon Aug 08, 2016 11:16 on the previous page.

Looks like I edited my previous post by mistake?

A Red Bluff DC site is conspicuously absent, but maybe Chargepoint will be doing that installation, as the southernmost DC site in its Red Bluff-to-the-border I-5 grant. Only one of these CP DCs (Yreka) is on the map, as of now.

You Southerners may want to check out the progress on Central CA/Socal routes, same map.

DC Sites from Red bluff north to the Oregon border (Chargepoint) are now located on that map.

I've had no luck getting progress reports from the grant recipients, yet.

Anyone spotted any sign of construction at any of the sites?...

I was recently told by a well-informed source that the Redding CEC-funded Chargepoint DC site is officially under construction.

Sure enough, on Friday I saw the fenced off area at the south end of the Target parking lot, near Dana drive, as indicated.

I'll update as the site develops.

No word on progress for any of the other Upstate I-5 DC sites, but it might be worth checking them out next time you drive by.

I am looking to get some confirmation on this...

The developers first recommended ELM-327 Bluetooth OBDII adapter.
Then said that due to a recent cost reduction (and feature reduction) many of the cheap ELM327 OBDII Bluetooth adapters from Asia no longer work with the Leaf and report themselves to be version 2.1. The only one currently recommended is the Bluetooth Konnwei KW902 which still supports all the needed ELM commands to communicate with the Leaf.
Now they say the previously recommended Bluetooth Konnwei KW902 OBDII adapter is also no longer recommended. With the release of version 0.39.97 LeafSpy Pro now supports two Bluetooth 4.x LE approved adapters. The recommended one is the LELink available from Amazon.

Is this still accurate? I have an Android Samsung Galaxy S7 edge...

LTLFTcomposite wrote:I have a question Mr dgpcolorado if it isn't being too nosey: had EVs not existed would you have spent what you did on your Tesla on an ICE car? What sort of car would you have otherwise bought?
I'd likely have kept my '96 Jeep Cherokee or replaced it with a somewhat newer used car. My LEAF actually replaced my 25 year old VW Golf — 230,000 miles, purchased new for $8600 — which I lost to a collision with a deer; I had just done some expensive repairs on it and planned to keep it for another five years and then see how the EV market was shaking out.

No, cars aren't my "thing." Driving on sunpower is. To elaborate:

I installed my first solar panels in 2008 as "phase 1" of a future electric car (and the cost came from the "car replacement fund" line in my budget). As GRA knows, I bicycle commuted for most of my career — 43,000 miles worth. Then I retired to the mountains to get away from the congestion of cities and suburbia. The problem is that it is an inefficient way to live: no public transportation, too challenging in terrain and weather for daily bicycle commuting (although I still do some rides down to town for a severe workout), seventy mile grocery shopping trips with 2500 feet of elevation change.

To me, the obvious way to reduce the impact of using a car, at least a little, was by driving an EV and fueling it with sunpower. Nevertheless, I had to wait a long time before the LEAF became available (I bought mine in Oregon and had it trucked to Colorado because they weren't being sold here yet). To get my LEAF serviced I had to drive it over Red Mountain Pass — 11,018 feet — to Durango, which involved about seven hours of charging in Durango and additional charging at a motel in Silverton that happened to have a 240 V L6-30 outlet they were kind enough to let me use. I considered myself lucky that I didn't have to tow my LEAF 330 miles to Denver for service. As the battery degraded (I think the heating from the high kW needed to ascend steep grades contributed to the problem) the grocery shopping trips were no longer possible in winter but by that time a public charge station had opened up in my destination city, so I was able to keep going with the LEAF for several more years.

As I said before, buying and driving beater used cars is far more cost-effective than buying new cars, including EVs, even with the temporary tax credits. For someone who needs an urban commuter car, it is hard to beat a used LEAF — they can be had at bargain prices IME. For someone who wants one EV that can do local driving as well as very long road trips, a used Tesla is the only option unless one is wealthy enough for a new one. Or just keep burning oil, as most people do. I now only go to gas stations to buy 0.4 gallons at a time for my chainsaw.

Did you check overall pack and individual cell-pair voltages with Leaf Spy before charging to make sure all wiring was properly reconnected? The pack is isolated from ground and the LBC (lithium battery controller) monitors that insulation. It will shutdown the high-voltage system if it detects an insulation problem.

There are the error codes.

I did not check the voltages before trying to charge but I did check the overall pack voltage before I installed it into the car. If I remember correctly it was about 380ish volts.

I was planning to drop the pack again and take a look inside to see if anything changed from when it was last open

Which part of the verbiage did you find confusing? The part about high-income people not being able to get both the rebate and the stickers seems clear. I admit the explanation of some of the expiration dates was a bit murky, but as best I can tell it says that those who got a sticker between 1/1/17 and 1/1/18 will have to get another one to carry them to the end of the expiration period.

I've heard at least several interpretations and I'm not sure which is right. Examples:
1) https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads ... st-2358153 - if your income is too high to qualify for CVRP, you also CANNOT get the HOV stickers. Thus, if you can't qualify for CVRP, you can't get the HOV stickers either.

2) You can only get 1 or the other (CVRP or sticker), if your income is too high. That wouldn't be so bad if since w/my current job, my income is too high so I can't qualify for CVRP anyway.

My earlier post directly quoted the text of the bill, and #2 is correct. To repeat:

(b)(1) The department shall not issue a decal, label, or other identifier to an applicant who has received a consumer rebate pursuant to the Clean Vehicle Rebate Project, established as part of the Air Quality Improvement Program pursuant to Article 3 (commencing with Section 44274) of Chapter 8.9 of Part 5 of Division 26 of the Health and Safety Code, for a vehicle purchased on or after January 1, 2018, unless the rebate was issued to a buyer whose gross annual income falls below one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) for a person who files a tax return as a single person, two hundred four thousand dollars ($204,000) for a person who files a tax return as a head of household, and three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000) for a person who files a joint tax return.

Someone imported it from California to Sweden earlier this year, so I'm expecting to lose the first capacity bar soon in this colder climate.

Unless it's right on the very edge of losing a bar, and you plan to Quick Charge a lot, I'd expect the opposite: for the 12th bar to hold on at least until you get some Hot Summer weather...

It doesn't have to be a pothole. In fact, washboard-like road or just rough pavement will do it - anything that greatly reduces the tire's adhesion on at least one wheel. The ABS overreacts to the slight loss of traction and reduces the braking power a lot. My guess is that it's because it isn't smart enough to be able to distinguish a rough patch from a patch of ice, so they program it for the worst case scenario. Gen III Priuses have the same issue.

ahr of 36? That seems lower than the norm? or not?

It is the lowest, that I am aware of, for dropping the fourth bar. Most of them seem to drop between 41 and 43. I was starting to get concerned, since I expected it to drop months ago, and the five years is up next February. The battery is very-well balanced, and I have not driven it as much this summer, as in the past, due to the decreased range. It might have dropped sooner, if I had been driving it more.

OK, will also post this on the VW e-Golf forum as well to see if this has happened to anyone who frequents this forum as a former LEAF owner (like me) ... I was experiencing an unability to remove the charging cable from the car one morning, tried EVERYTHING - including an emergency procedure detailed in the owners manual (press the unlock button on the key fob and full charge button next to the charge port) and it just would not unlock. Called VWOA customer service to no avail. I did see what looked like a small cylinder or post above the J1772 nozzle on the car that stuck out, pushed it in with a solid plastic stick and voila it unlocked ! — then took it in to my VW dealer. Here is the long term fix - not documented in the owners manual at all. To unlock the charger, you first unlock the car outside with the key fob or pressing the drivers door handle then press the unlock button INSIDE the car - this seems to always work now, go figure ?

Still love the car but the locking charger cable seems to have had a mind of its own - not sure if this is just specific to MY 2015 e-Golf or later cars as well, as this was frustrating to say the least thought it was worth sharing

What is the condition for Leaf Spy to recognize that a Leaf has stopped charging (and thereby save the charge log)? I just did a quick charge which produced a nice graph, but the log was not saved (see screenshot) and there was no option to manually save the log. Upon exiting the program, the log was wiped, and the graph was replaced with the "default" quick charge graph.

Unrelated, but also a major issue for me, I have had 3 phones in total running Leaf Spy Pro with my Leaf, and the first two were connected to Dropbox. The third, I have never been able to successfully connect to Dropbox, it always has some errors, either folders missing (if I delete the old folders manually and remove the App link from Dropbox) or just "Dropbox disabled". How do I clean up the Dropbox connection and start fresh with this phone?

Thanks Cor for my successful module swap (2013 pack at 92% into a 2011 Leaf, replacing a 44% SOH pack). Ran it down to VLBW today since I wasn't too sure what the real state of charge was, and quick charged it up to 71% (per the readout on the CHAdeMO station, the car's BMS thought it was at 92.5% at end of charge), pack temps didn't exceed 79 F. Probably shouldn't have abused the new pack that much, but I'm sure it will hold up fine, cell voltage was still around 3.7 when I got to the QC with "---" on the GOM.

I'll keep you all updated on how long it takes for the battery gauge to figure out the new pack, still reads 5 bars at the moment.

It seems like we need to start 2 separate threads for compatible/recommended/don't work/not recommended OBD2 dongles: 1 for iOS and another for Android. And, they should be ones where discussion is purely limited to model w/purchase link, purchase date, whether it works or not and if there are failures/flakiness.

Besides LELink, there's so much scattered info scattered all over the place such as:
- http://www.electricvehiclewiki.com/?tit ... th_Scanner
- the 3 Google Play Store listings (for Lite, regular and Pro versions)
- the 1 iOS App Store listing
- various posts buried within threads

I picked my 2 adapters in July 2015 based upon positive reports in some thread.

Autocross Event with my EV on race tires!

Report from today's autocross with the Leaf. All in all was a lot of fun considering the intended purpose of the Nissan Leaf and the on-paper stats (107hp, 3400lbs). Running 225/45/17 BFG Rivals (the most competitive tire in the class) I was about 3 seconds off of a Mini Cooper S with decent tires and placed 13th out of 23. I was 4 seconds off the lead car.

The weight of the car and the open differential really hurt overall performance. Aftermarket suspension would help a lot, but only so much. Basically at low speeds the inside tire would spin like crazy unless you took care to feather the throttle. It is really odd not having engine noise as feedback, but on the other hand you can hear every little noise the tires make.

In the end removing the fuses for traction and stability control and ABS was key, the car will not let you throw it around like this with the systems enabled, and with them off I noticed no bad tendencies or problems except a bunch of warning lights on the dash. I have a Leaf Box but I unplugged it as not to introduce any unwanted tendencies not prepared for by the Nissan engineers.

We towed it 200 miles round trip otherwise it would not have been possible. We started at 100% charge and ended about 50% after about 10 minutes total of running! Nearest charger was L2 and 25 miles away.

FWIW, at the SF celebrity chef EVent for the '18 Leaf last night, I did see an number posters/displays touting V2H and picturing a Leaf attached to a box similar to the one at http://www.nichicon.co.jp/english/produ ... ew124.html. I didn't bother taking pictures of it.

Nissan also touted it during the live-streamed launch from Japan.

At the Cupertino EVent last month they had a V2H box attached to the '18 Leaf powering some stuff at their tent. I don't think this is the first time they've done that at Drive Electric Week EVents.

At the Sunnyvale EVent last month at Nissan's research office, in one of the side conversations after the presentation ended, someone did ask the marketing guy about it. I recall him essentially saying they're working on partnering with a company/companies in the US to provide a solution for consumers. Sounded like there was debate as to the distribution channel (e.g. electric utility or someone else).

I installed DRLs myself, as detailed here:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=23225&hilit=DRLs&start=10#p483505

You'll find, in the forum post I referenced, someone who had the same issue as you (lights coming on during charging). The root cause was tapping into the wrong wire, which is very likely what your installer did.

My total cost was about $40, most of which was for the LED lightbars.

I bought ones similar to this, but mine have 5 LEDs instead of 3:

http://www.lightdepot.ca/12v-led-drl-le ... p-374.html

I would take it back and tell them to wire it properly, but if you get no joy with that then it's not hard to do yourself.

EU mirrors are straight, no distortion.
Leaf has a nice mirror design. Big enough.
Also the only right way to have mirrors adjusted is so that you
can see one door handle tip (and no door) without moving your head.
Leaf's mirrors are have a corner. Exactly at that corner should one see
crome handle.
