That is of course if the OP has a 120 volt, 20 amp circuit in his garage to plug into.

And you've purchased the optional $34(shipped) adapter, otherwise it's just 12a @ 120v, same as the stock charger.
Note I believe if you purchase the adapter at the same time as you have your charger upgraded you may not be hit with the $8.95 shipping, otherwise if you made the mistake like I did and planned on using an existing adapter you'll be SOL :( which is why my upgraded EVSE is only 12a. I guess not a big deal as I rarely use 120v and if I need more than the 12a I just use my Juicebox that goes to 27.5a @ 120v(of course assuming your circuit/outlet is rated for that). I occasionally have access to a TT30 RV outlet but generally limit it to 24a(the 80% rule for a 30a circuit).

Update: just checked the EVSE Upgrade site and it looks like with a '15-'16 Leaf the max charge with a upgraded EVSE is 16a @240v, my upgraded '13 would go to 20a@240V, the OPs being a '16 would be limited to 16a, something I personally wouldn't care for as I use 19a all the time, but it is what it is, there must be a limitation with the newer chargers.

Suggests that the leak is small on the national scale, just a fraction of what leaks every day. Time for more regulation.

I'm in the market for an additional FOB and have found a bunch out there for sale (OEM) that have cut keys. This yields my question: So....can I just get a replacement key and have it cut (the blank it that hard part)

Leaf S - replacing the radio?

pereze wrote:Wow, didn't know this thread was still alive until I was doing some additional searching a few minutes ago. I thought I might be able to give back with what I have learned so far.

  1. A double DIN radio will fit, but leaves a gap on both the right and left side. After doing a lot of image searches, I took a gamble and assumed a 2013 Frontier has the same radio (which also seemed to be confirmed after looking at wiring diagrams). I ordered the Metra 95-7619
    http://www.amazon.com/Metra95-7619-Stereo-Installation-2013-Up-Frontier/dp/B00GNG3X7W
I was only able to use the middle insert and used a glue gun to attach it to the main dash kit.

  2. The wire harnesses for the leaf are odd. You will need multiple harnesses if you want to maintain certain functions like backup camera, steering wheel controls, usb, etc to work.

Here is the completed harness in all its glory. I know it looks really bad, but I did clean it up a bit and tie it up nice. A bonus of the leaf is there is a lot of room behind the radio.
    Image

Here are the various connectors I used:
      Ax-nisusb-2 - for USB connector
      40-NI12 - for Antenna
70-552 - standard harness. I actually used the Scosche version and moved over a couple of additional wires for steering wheel controls from this harness. You could also just use 2 of these
Ax-NIS32swc - for backup camera (more on this below)

  3. For the backup Camera I used the Ax-NIS32swc harness. This harness says it is for steering wheel control, but I found it mostly useless for anything but the camera. The camera on the Nissan's (and some other OEMs) are 6v cameras. While I read reports that you could feed it 12v, I didn't want to risk it so I dropped in a 12v to 6v step down converter.
    http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00NICVEE8/ref=sr_ph?ie=UTF8&qid=1452869678&sr=1&keywords=12v+to+6v
I wired that into the harness and plugged the RCA into the back on my new double din.

  4. The generic Nissan harness does not have wires for the steering wheel controls. I used a wiring schematic to figure out the pins I needed to use and then added wires from an extra harness I bought. If you get some good pliers, you can pull the wire out of the harness fairly easily and push it into the harness you are planning on using. I used the Axxess ASWC-1. If you look on their site for instructions for the Nissan Frontier, you will find the right pins and connections.

For me, I had so many different things to power, I used a relay to help distribute the power. You need power for the antenna, camera, steering wheel control module, emergency brake by-pass, the stereo itself and for a relay to any amps you are running. It seemed crazy that all of these things would need power, but it worked out in the end.

I am REALLY happy I made the change. It was a pain, and took a lot of planning, research, etc, but I love having a solid output to the amps, HD radio, Bigger backup camera, etc. I have only gotten volume controls to work from the steering wheel controls, but that was the main thing I wanted to work. I haven't had time to mess with it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was something I did wrong that is causing the Source switch to not work.

Here is a (Bad) picture of what the rear view camera looks like on the screen.
Image

Here is a first pass at the dash kit around the stereo. I ended up moving it back a little so it is more flush with the sides. *One note: Because of how far back the stereo sits and this particular stereo having a flip down screen, it doesn't flip down. I thought about spacing it out so the front of the stereo sticks out more but I haven't needed the CD/DVD slot in 6 months so I am not sure if it worth the effort.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

That looks fantastic. If I had an S, there's no way I wouldn't do this.

My latest AHr is 51.86 which would put me at around 78% SOH. Why the discrepancy and is AHr really the only reliable measure to look at the state of the battery?

Not to "rain on your parade", but I don't think there is any way you're going to drop ~10 Ahr of capacity in the next 10 months. You could probably leave it parked in an oven and still not make it. Nobody knows the exact trigger, but there appears to be some "soak time" involved once you get past 43 AHr or so (and you're still a long way from that).

+1

Even in the Arizona climate, we are losing around 1% SOH per month and it would take 15ish months to be close to 8 bars in AZ.

Yes, the 240V station is much better than the 120V cord. However, if the car took 12 hours to charge, then it was about 1/2 full (it takes about 25-27 hrs from Turtle to 100%) and thus still available to drive at least 30-40 mi. So, not quite "unusable", especially in a small town. Right now my 2011 Leaf (2-bar loser) is sitting at about 50% and I probably won't even bother to plug it in tonight since I only drive about 10 mi/day.

Turning off timer

Just wanted to say a me too. Like bitflung I have a 2012 SL, and during a Christmas
break tried turning off the charge timers, but also had to use the override
button. Then about a year ago my schedule changed so that I no longer needed
the timers, this time however, turning them off worked as expected. I could not
think of any thing different that I did. The days are all still set. Maybe one had
to wait a while after turning them off? I talked to a dealer tech about this. He
had not heard about it before, and I decided not pursue the issue at the time.

Dr. H., I might have to take you up on your offer. It's not urgent, to be sure.

I also helped an EV newbie by leaving an "OK to Unplug" charger hang tag on their Focus EV that I saw with a temporary tag at the Sam's Club off North Oak Tfwy in the Northland.

Finally, although I never heard back from the Parkville parks guy, I found a live 120V box near the farmer's market. At this point, I guess I'll have to ask for forgiveness rather than permission since I'm not getting any feedback.

The drain on the 12 volt battery is much less than 500 ma. It wouldn't last too long at that rate. If you were seeing 500ma, either a light was on somewhere, like the trunk, or one of the computers was still awake. If I recall, there is probably at least one of the body control computers that stays active for a few minutes after power off.

Nice work! I'm really hoping that someone soon puts all these parts together in a nice turnkey kit for anyone that wants to build an EV. Every kit I have seen still uses a DC motor and the associated 1980's technology. After a few years, there should be tons of used Leaf parts that could be used for conversions.

A) It isn't a Model 3.

This was at a European store. Not likely somewhere Tesla would have a Model 3 prototype.

Estimating the useful energy content of the battery from its measured terminal characteristics isn't a completely trivial problem, either, though. It's a little like trying to calculate how much government you've got by adding up the taxes you've paid: sometimes, quite a large flow can go in without appearing to do much...

If you have read this far, I thank you for your time. Please let me know what I can do to change the regulations regarding the estimated driving range of electric vehicles. It is important that manufacturers not be penalized for giving consumers the ability to conveniently limit charging to 80%, as it effects the overall lifespan of the car, and hence the total cost to the consumer and the total hazardous waste produced in battery disposal.

Thanks for sending this letter. I definitely agree with the underlined sentiment.
