Since Andy is feeling depressed by the state of the world, maybe this will help a little:

Thanks for the shot, Guy, it's a little help. We need a steep negative slope that results in getting to zero emissions by no later than 2050.

The COP19 reps are still talking about (and failing to agree on) steps needed to keep the temperature rise to 2°C, while the planet's on course for between 4 and 6. On the plus side, the US and UK have agreed to no longer subsidize new coal power plants in the rest of the world. On the minus side, COP19 was heavily sponsored by the world's fossil fuel industries and they had 'delegates' in the talks and people in many of the press conferences... And Poland (98% coal powered) held a 'we love coal' industry conference in parallel with the COP19 assembly in Warsaw.

Scientists interviewed this week in Warsaw commented on the 'Alice in Wonderland' or 'alternative universe' feel of the disconnect between negotiations and reality.

Squarely on topic - more German grid storage batteries are being deployed. At least some of them are hybrids of sodium sulfur and Panasonic lithium-ion. One project is to add batteries on a island in the Azores - it will allow them to use 100% of their renewable generation - but wait - there's more!
Quote:
The next step is to use “excess energy” to turn local bio waste into synthetic diesel from a back up system. That will mean that the island becomes 100% renewable and 100 fuel independent.

This is partially funded by the 18 million Euros they save each year shipping diesel to the island...
