Hi Gang,

I have never leased a vehicle but have read most of the threads here to get a sense of how this works. My initial goal was to lease a Leaf S for 36 mo/12,000 per year. The $199/mo advertised deal and Clark Howard sparked my interest. This would allow me to run my two gas powered cars another three years. In fact at current gas prices, electric rates, savings from lower mileage on the gas cars, etc, a lease outlay of about $225 or less leaves me "in the black" all the way around. Now the problem.

The best deal I've gotten after checking with 2 dealers in the Buffalo suburbs is as follows:

36 mo, 12,000 mi.
MSRP: $29,650
Discount: $814
Sub-total: $28,836
Sales Tax: $2,523
Title/doc: $108
TOTAL: $31,456

Then lop off the $7,500 and the monthly payment is $278 with an out of pocket of $2,000 and a residual of $14,528.

My guess is that the sales tax is what makes this look so bad. NY has no "extra" incentives like GA and other states.

if it is for an S it is on the high side, at a minimum you should be able to negotiate the upfront 2k payment in half.
living in that part of the world it is recommended that you get the SV or SL for their better heaters.
if you can get that deal for a SV it isn't too bad
