considering he bought later after the price cuts, he should be pocketing money after fuel savings are considered.
for me, i was first in WA to get my LEAF which means i paid waaaay more than just about any of you and generally more than double what anyone this year has paid.
but i already knew that as an early adopter, i would pay more and that i am ok with. after 35,000 miles i figure i am saving 4.8 to 10.2 cents a mile (not a guess!) on fuel savings alone verses the various other gas cars i have access to.
that equates to $1860 to $3570.
But for the last 8,000 miles I have been using my vehicle for work in which they reimburse me mileage that is tax free so not subject to ANY other reductions, income tax liabilities, etc. at the rate of 35-46 cents per mile (based on price of gas and is currently 42 cents while gas hovers about $3.60 in the area)
that has given me an additional $220-380 a month in income and is on a car that i was on pace to turn in with 12,000 miles not used on my 15,000 mile per year lease. with 10,000 miles more to go i am looking at another $3,000 or so.
So, what had become a huge out of pocket expense for me has now lowered my real cost quite a bit. in the gas savings range, the lower end was compared against my Prius which was replaced by a Yaris. The Yaris was barely getting 30 mpg mostly because the drive was 9.6 miles RT all in town during Winter. (the policy here is LEAF takes longest drive of the day unless my work requires me to go where public charging is not convenient. For this, i have Yaris about a half dozen times or simply opted for the Company Van Pool which is an option if space is available)
