As a "civilian" (no auto industry background) I'd prefer to believe Nissan simply didn't anticipate the way demand has been shaping up for the model S, and will adjust production as quickly as possible to address the issue and get more S models in dealerships ASAP.
OTOH, this may well be a naïve view, and the shortage is just a contrived strategy to sell higher-end models.
What do the auto industry veterans and insiders here say?
